Xbox 360 Repair: Opening the Console

Well, I had to fix my 360 again last night, so I decided to film a video about repairing it. The first step is obviously getting it open, and the Xbox 360 isn’t just held together with screws, so you’ll probably need some kind of guide to get it open (I know I did). You’ll need some screwdrivers, mainly a small flat one and a Torx T10 (for other parts you’ll also need a T8, such as to remove the ring of light/power button board or the X clamps). As for those asking for step 2, I don’t think …

It’s probably either clogged with dust, has a worn out/slow/broken internal fan, or has bad thermal paste. If you don’t mind taking it apart, I’d clean it out first. Dust can get on the fan blades and make them slow. Also you can clean the heatsinks as they get filled with dust and don’t work as well. You can also replace the thermal paste with better quality paste like Arctic Silver 5.

Buy one that says T10 on it…or get a set, they are fairly cheap and have everything from like T4 to T12 which should be all you need for electronics repair.

5mm machine screws. These are often called M5 (at least in USA, meaning Metric-5mm). I got them at Lowes. The washers are also 5mm (hole diameter) and may also be called M5. You need nylon ones (8 of them) and steel ones (at least 16, I think I used 20 because I had an extra 4 on the CPU).

I always do the side with the power first since it’s only 2. Hold that side open with your right hand and get the sections apart over the fans by pulling. Then stick your hand between the two halves to keep them apart while you pop the other 5 latches starting at the fan side and going to the end. Move your hand down as you pop each latch to keep them from closing.

If you have E74, I had RRoD (which was already under warranty), problem is I got the box from a friend (warranty non-transferrable) and he had already opened it anyways so the warranty was void.

Thanks alot man. There was ALOT of dust inside my Xbox, it could just barely read my CDs, so I took a vacuum cleaner and sucked it all out! It seems to be working better now, thanks for your help :>
